Purpose

To provide a consistent approach to identifying hazards and controlling risks to students, staff and visitors, supporting compliance with health and safety law and Independent School Standards.

Scope

Premises, curriculum activities, behaviour and individual student risk, educational visits, and contractor activities as applicable.

Definitions

Risk assessment is a structured process of identifying hazards, evaluating risk and deciding control measures.

Procedures

When to assess

Risk assessment is required for significant hazards, new activities, educational visits, higher-risk curriculum areas, and where a student's needs create foreseeable risk.

Method

Identify hazards, who might be harmed, existing controls, additional controls, and residual risk. Record and communicate. Review after incidents or change.

Dynamic risk assessment

Staff use professional judgement to adapt controls in changing situations while maintaining safety and dignity.

Monitoring

The Leadership Team monitors implementation through learning walks, safeguarding reviews, incident analysis, staff feedback, student voice and commissioner feedback. Findings inform training and school improvement planning.

This policy is reviewed at least annually, or sooner following changes in legislation, statutory guidance, or significant incidents. Next formal review:

Legislation and guidance

This policy has regard to the Education (Independent School Standards)

Regulations 2014, Keeping Children Safe in Education (latest DfE edition), Working Together to Safeguard Children, the Equality Act 2010, the Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR, and other DfE statutory and non-statutory guidance relevant to the subject of this policy. Where Independent School registration is completed, this policy will be reviewed against any updated registration conditions and DfE requirements.
