Purpose
To ensure students with medical conditions are properly supported so they have full access to education, in line with DfE guidance and welfare standards.
Scope
All students with short-term or long-term medical needs, including those with Education, Health and Care Plans where health needs affect education.
Definitions
- **IHCP / Individual Healthcare Plan:** a plan describing a student's medical
needs, support and emergency arrangements (where required).
Responsibilities
- Leaders ensure arrangements are in place before a student with significant
medical needs starts, wherever possible.
- Named staff may administer medication only with training and consent as
required.
- Parents and carers provide up-to-date medical information and consent.
Procedures
Information and planning
Medical needs are gathered at admission. Where appropriate, an Individual Healthcare Plan is agreed with families and health professionals.
Medication
Medication is stored securely, labelled and administered according to consent and training. Records are kept. Emergency medicines (for example inhalers or auto-injectors) are accessible according to the student's plan.
Emergencies
Staff follow the student's plan and call 999 when needed. Parents are contacted promptly.
Inclusion
Students are not denied education because of medical needs. Reasonable adjustments and reintegration after absence are planned.
Monitoring
The Leadership Team monitors implementation through learning walks, safeguarding reviews, incident analysis, staff feedback, student voice and commissioner feedback. Findings inform training and school improvement planning.

This policy is reviewed at least annually, or sooner following changes in legislation, statutory guidance, or significant incidents. Next formal review:

Legislation and guidance
This policy has regard to the Education (Independent School Standards)
Regulations 2014, Keeping Children Safe in Education (latest DfE edition), Working Together to Safeguard Children, the Equality Act 2010, the Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR, and other DfE statutory and non-statutory guidance relevant to the subject of this policy. Where Independent School registration is completed, this policy will be reviewed against any updated registration conditions and DfE requirements.
