Purpose
To ensure that all students, including those with SEND or social, emotional and mental health needs, can access the curriculum through planned, responsive adjustments by staff.
Scope
All teaching, mentoring and curriculum delivery across Evolution Education centres and digital learning.
Definitions
- Adaptive teaching: proactive adjustment of tasks, expectations and delivery so every learner can succeed from their starting point.
- ILP: Individual Learning Plan.
- Student Passport: a concise record of needs, strategies and support.
Responsibilities
- All staff demonstrate adaptive strategies in planning and delivery.
- Adaptations align with ILPs, Student Passports and assessment data.
- Curriculum and quality leaders monitor consistency through observations, learning walks and curriculum reviews.

Procedures
Principles
Teaching is planned with awareness of each student's starting point, needs and strengths. Adaptation is proactive, not reactive. Evidence of adaptation appears in lesson plans, ILPs, Student Passports and daily delivery.
Examples of adaptive practice
Chunked instructions; scaffolded tasks such as sentence starters and model answers; alternative recording methods; adjusted time expectations; quiet working spaces; visual aids and graphic organisers; differentiated success criteria; pre-teaching or repetition with mentors; regulation breaks linked to individual plans; and digital tools that support literacy, numeracy or organisation.
Impact measures
Leaders look for improved engagement, reduced dysregulation, progress in English, Maths and vocational subjects, successful reintegration milestones, student and family feedback, and staff logs showing effective differentiation.
Monitoring
Adaptive teaching is reviewed through lesson observations and learning walks, ILP reviews, Student Passport updates, mentoring and intervention logs, and curriculum leader oversight.
Review Cycle
This policy is reviewed at least annually, or sooner following changes in legislation, statutory guidance, or significant incidents. Next formal review: January 2027. Approved by the Proprietor / Leadership Team.

Legislation and guidance
This policy has regard to the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014, Keeping Children Safe in Education (latest DfE edition), Working Together to Safeguard Children, the Equality Act 2010, the Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR, and other DfE statutory and non-statutory guidance relevant to the subject of this policy. Where Independent School registration is completed, this policy will be reviewed against any updated registration conditions and DfE requirements.
