Subject overview

What this subject covers

Curriculum intent

Use sport as a pathway to engagement, health, leadership and recognised qualifications. Sports Performance and Leadership is not built around a single award. It develops confident young leaders and coaches through sport, then uses Sports Leaders, PE Life Skills and related certificates to accredit that learning.

Knowledge and skills

Leadership styles, communication, session planning, the STEP framework, coaching and feedback, safeguarding and professional conduct, event leadership, fitness, teamwork and employability habits.

Assessment

Practical leadership tasks each half term, plus three termly assessment windows for portfolio evidence, internal sign-off and awarding-organisation verification where required.

Qualifications

Sports Leaders Levels 1 and 2, PE Life Skills, FA EE Playmaker, Safeguarding in Sport, Basic Health and Safety, and optional Emergency First Aid, alongside BTEC Sport where studied.

Progression routes

College sport courses, coaching and fitness pathways, apprenticeships, public services, community leadership and lifelong healthy habits.

Fitness and discipline

Sport that builds confidence

From gym sessions to boxing, students learn discipline, teamwork and leadership in spaces designed for active learning.

Sport is not an add-on here. It is a pathway to engagement, health and recognised awards.

How we teach it

Delivered by Ismail, planned for every learner

Ismail, our Sport and Vocational Teacher, leads Sports Performance and Leadership on the sports pathway. Teaching stays practical: short applied leadership tasks, peer feedback and real sessions with others.

Learning is adapted so every young person can take part. That can mean co-leading, visual prompts, shorter stages, or more challenge for those ready to organise a full event. Progress sits in the personal plan alongside English, mathematics and destination goals.

Safeguarding content is taught as a professional standard for young leaders, and is reviewed with our Designated Safeguarding Lead before it is delivered each year.

Personalisation

Planned around the young person

Every learner has a personal plan. Subject teaching is adapted to starting points, pathway goals and any extra support agreed with families and professionals.

Sport, mentoring and enrichment sit alongside subject study so young people can stay engaged and make progress that matters.
